DJ SunnyZee: Creating Through Liberation, Community, and Love

In a world where artists are often pressured to chase fame, trends, and validation, DJ SunnyZee is choosing a different path. As a DJ, educator, poet, and community advocate, her mission is rooted in something much deeper: freedom.

“My personal goal is to be free,” SunnyZee explains. “To feel as if nothing is holding me back, and I hope that that energy translates to those around me.”

That philosophy serves as the foundation of everything she creates. Whether she’s behind the DJ booth, organizing community-centered events, or sharing poetry, SunnyZee uses art as a vehicle for truth, healing, and liberation.

Navigating the Challenges of Being a DJ

Building an audience as a DJ has become increasingly difficult in the digital age. Copyright restrictions and content takedowns have made it harder than ever for DJs to share their mixes online.

“Building an audience as a DJ can be hard due to all the copyright restrictions,” she says. “You used to be able to post your mixes and mashups with no problem, but now you’ve got to do all these tricks and loopholes just to share a mix.”

Despite these challenges, SunnyZee remains committed to finding creative ways to connect with listeners and share her work.

Artistic Inspirations

When it comes to DJs who inspire her, SunnyZee points to Zach Fox and A13Mando.

“They just play what’s in their heart, not what they think people want to hear.”

As a rapper and lyricist, she draws inspiration from artists such as Rapsody, Mac Miller, and Freddie Gibbs.

“They appreciate the art form of rap from a place of reverence and not exploitation.”

Their authenticity and dedication to the craft continue to influence her own artistic journey.

Redefining Success

Since beginning her career in 2018, SunnyZee’s definition of success has evolved dramatically.

“I’ve let go of the notion of wanting notoriety and fame,” she shares. “I just want to have enough off my art to live.”

Rather than pursuing celebrity status, her goal is self-sufficiency and independence through creative work. For SunnyZee, success means being able to sustain herself through her passion while remaining true to her values.

Community as a Form of Resistance

One of the most powerful aspects of SunnyZee’s work is her commitment to community engagement. Many of her events focus on mutual aid, education, and relationship-building.

“I enjoy community work and educational events. Most of my events are centered around mutual aid and building relationships in the community.”

She believes these grassroots efforts are essential as society faces growing social and economic challenges.

“I believe these kinds of events are going to be our saving grace as we enter into this dystopian world.”

Art Rooted in Truth

When asked what themes define her work, SunnyZee keeps it simple:

Liberation. Community. Love.

These principles guide not only her art but also the way she moves through the world. She isn’t interested in creating work that simply makes people comfortable.

“Truth is where I reside and where I center my art. If that offends or makes you uncomfortable, my art isn’t for you.”

Her commitment to honesty has become one of the defining characteristics of her creative voice.

More Than a DJ

While many know her as a DJ, SunnyZee’s creative identity extends far beyond music.

“I’m an all-around artist,” she says. “My work as an educator, DJ, and poet centers around art and creativity.”

This multidisciplinary approach allows her to connect with people in multiple ways, blending education, performance, and storytelling into a unified artistic vision.

The Healing Journey of Innerchild

One of the projects she’s most proud of is her 2021 mixtape, Innerchild.

“It was me taking accountability for my own healing and reaching back to lil Zion to let her know that I see her, I love her, and I will always stand up for her.”

The project serves as both a personal reflection and a powerful reminder of the importance of self-love, healing, and accountability.

Advice for Fellow Creatives

For artists trying to navigate the demands of creativity, work, and life, SunnyZee offers one piece of advice above all else:

Rest.

“You have to take care of yourself. If you don’t, your body will shut you down.”

As someone living with a chronic illness, she understands firsthand how important it is to protect one’s physical and mental well-being.

“If I don’t, my art suffers too. Rest is essential.”

It’s a lesson many creatives overlook, but one that SunnyZee believes is crucial for sustaining both artistic excellence and personal wellness.
