The South Bronx has a rich history in hip hop and salsa music, with many legendary artists hailing from the area. One artist who carries on this musical tradition is Lazaris The Top Don. Born Lazaro Rafael Martinez, Lazaris comes from a family with a strong musical lineage, including his grandfather, a respected Afro-Cuban percussionist, and his uncle Arsenio Rodriguez, known as the "Godfather of Salsa". Lazaris grew up surrounded by the music of his uncle and the pioneers of hip hop, which sparked his own desire for creative expression.
At just 9 years old, Lazaris began participating in local rap battles, quickly gaining recognition for his freestyle skills. He caught the attention of Cuban Link, a member of the Terror Squad, who praised Lazaris' talent and called him a breath of fresh air in South Bronx hip hop. Inspired by his musical heritage and the idea of unifying the hip hop community, Lazaris adopted the name "Lazaris The Top Don".
Lazaris continued to refine his craft and perform at various venues, including the famous Rhumbas Nightclub. He also collaborated with other artists and ghostwrote songs, establishing himself as a versatile and talented artist. In 2008, he won a rap competition sponsored by BOOST MOBILE, which led to a performance at Summer Jam and further exposure for his music.
Lazaris' journey also took him to "The Fight Club," an underground rap battle scene in Manhattan. His lyrical skills caught the attention of judges such as DJ Big Mike Shells and Eminem, further solidifying his reputation as a skilled MC.
Beyond his music career, Lazaris is also an entrepreneur, owning his own label called Top Don Empire. He is mentored and sponsored by Da Inphamaus Amadeus from Shade 45 and IGetatems. Lazaris's goal is not only personal success but also to uplift and guide other aspiring artists in their own journeys.
With his unique blend of English and Spanish flows and his ability to deliver rapid-fire freestyles, Lazaris aims to bring hip hop back to its roots in the Bronx. As the "Top Don of The Bronx" and a respected figure in the New York music scene, he continues to strive for breakthrough hits and hopes to reclaim hip hop's crown.
